Hyperhidrosis is a disorder characterized by abnormally enhanced sweating, in excess of that needed for management of body temperature. Although principally a physical issue, hyperhidrosis can affect a person’s quality of life from an emotional and social point of view. It is estimated around 2.3% of people suffer from excessive sweating, most commonly under the arms, on the palms of the hands, or the soles of the feet.
Sometimes people are born with hyperhidrosis, or it may develop later, with most instances of excessive sweating manifesting during adolescence.
It is estimated most people suffer with the condition for an average of 9 years before seeking help. This may be because they are not aware help is available, out of embarrassment, or they think any treatment would be more evasive than they are prepared to bear; but there is no need to needlessly suffer from this very common condition.
